Although you can't beat seeing things in the flesh, the Google Art project site provides an excellent alternative when time, cash & distance is a challenge. You can take a virtual tour of some of the major galleries in the world including Tate Britain, MoMA and Uffizi. The site allows you to browse painting by painting with super high-res images that allow you to zoom in really close. And what's more it's free to use.
